Handling a Coffee Catastrophe - JJM Style

Thanks for joining us again for another slightly entertaining episode of the Friday Coffee Chronicles with the Java Joe Mamas.  This week's question is coming to us via E-mail and just came in asking for snark....I hope the answer wasn't too full of it..oh who am I kidding?

So you just pour the perfect cup of coffee. The creamer to coffee ratio is perfect. The temperature is exact. You set your cup down for a second to go do something and when you return there is a bug in it. What is the proper way to handle a bug in the coffee?

National Coffee Day!

I can't tell you how excited I am to share with you some interesting coffee facts on this, the National Day of Coffee...Please grab a cuppa joe, enjoy the music and learn a little something - I know I did!

  1. Coffee is the second largest traded commodity surpassed only by Oil, the world's world's largest traded commodity.
  2. Espresso has 1/3 of the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee. (Which is why I need at least a quad shot standard)
  3. "Expresso" is not a word; it comes from the same root as "express" as in "The Express Train." The term is ESPRESSO.
  4. Turkish bridegrooms were required to make a promise to always provide their wives with coffee. If they failed, it was grounds for divorce!
  5. Dark roasted coffees actually have LESS caffeine than medium roasts. The longer coffee is roasted, the more caffeine burns off in the process..
  6. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a cantata about coffee between 1732 and 1734. (Featured in the video below)
  7. 91% of coffee consumed is taken at breakfast. And sometimes is breakfast.
  8. The 3 biggest coffee drinkers in the world are the Americans, the French and the Germans. Consuming some 65% of the total world consumption.
  9. A small study had shown that 2 cups of coffee alleviated the pain of post-gym muscle pain.
  10. Every single one of the fifty-three countries that grows coffee is located along the equator, between the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn.

So tell me..how will you celebrate this "Coffee Day"?
Do you have any interesting coffee facts to share??

Coffee Concentrate - A How To

Welcome to our second addition of COFFEE CHRONICLES - the place you can come to every Friday to get your coffee questions answered..
This week's question comes to us from a reader who inquires about coffee concentrate and comes complete with recipe:

I love my iced coffee and see lots of recipes for cold brew "concentrates" but they never say how much to use to make the actual drink! I drink one 8 oz iced coffee a day, how much cold brew syrup should I put in there? And what do y'all think is the best recipe/method for cold brew?
Thanks,
E.

Versatile Me?

Third time's the charm right?  I have been awarded this in the last few months and didn't share not because I wasn't grateful or because I didn't have great bloggers to share, I think I'm just lazy.  I appreciate that there are lovely people out there that enjoy my blog and here they are:

The three lovely bloggers that gave it to me:

1. Amberr Meadows of Like a Bump on a Blog

Now being that I am overdue on sharing seven things about me, I will share 10 - I know you can't hold your excitement to learn things about me but even more exciting is that I will also be sharing 30 bloggers that I think are great instead of 15 like the rules state.

Presenting Coffee Chronicles

WELCOME to our first addition of COFFEE CHRONICLES
The place you can come to every Friday to get your coffee questions answered!
Grab a cuppa joe and join us for this week's question coming to us from a reader about a Starbucks issue I've found in any coffeehouse when ordering a specialty drink a little out of the ordinary. Personally, I always get more shots of espresso than what's called for in any given drink..all our orders are special..they each should be treated as such!

I want to know how I can order my drink at Starbucks and get them to make it correctly without attitude. Can you help me with that one? (I'm being serious, I order a decaf, soy drink and I always get attitude when they forget to make it decaf or soy).

Thanks,
J.

Got Coffee?? Inquiries Needed

So you know how things happen on twitter...you chat it up with your friends and then something gets suggested like, "Hey let's make the bedazzled shake weight" or "Let's start a band called #VaginaMonologues" that sound like great fun at the start, are laughed heartily about for awhile and then turn into an inside joke of sorts but are left at the idea rather than actually turning into something...

I Kiss Better Than I Cook

I have this saying in my kitchen and go by it every day: "Leave Things Just a Little Better Than You Found Them."  This is really a message for my children to pick up after themselves and my way of delegating duties.

My kitchen is never completely clean, yeah I clean it but it will never up to standards of certain company and it's only a little better than the condition I found it in in the first place. It hasn't been perfect since the day we moved in, and probably not even then. I have too much counter space that's easy to pile things up on.  I have a list of other lame excuses that don't even really justify it anymore especially with the kids back in school and me not working but in reality, I just don't feel like cleaning because it's a hopeless cause.  Not even 5 minutes after I clean something, someone spills or glitters it all up.  My idea of "clean" (and I use those quotations very loosely) is not that of anyone else's especially those who hardcore clean daily which honestly I have never done. Maybe almost once but then it's good for a couple weeks kind of thing.

While we are at it, I also have a sign in my kitchen that states: "I Kiss Better Than I Cook." This is debatable seeing as it would be hard to judge with the fact that I don't do either very often. (I kiss my kids more often than my husband but that's a whole other post.) So to say I'm slacking on the wifely duty department is putting it mildly. I procrastinate majority of the time and I could easily be a professional time waster.  I'm a slacker - there I said what my MIL has been telling my husband for years and what he thinks, he just has yet to voice it. Well the "kissing" part he voices quite often but has only once criticized my cleaning abilities to my face anyway and must just know not to mention it.

10 Things - The Parent Edition - Life's Little Instruction Book

Ten little things you already know just to keep in mind this year as your child goes through the school year in all the activities and projects:
  1. Cherish your children for what they are, not what you would like them to be.
  2. Work hard to create in your children a good self-image.  It's the most important thing you can do to insure their success.
  3. Attend you children's athletic contests, science fairs, plays and recitals.

Pretty Sneaky, Sis..

My kids are now 7 and 9 - apparently the ages where manipulation begins to take on a whole new degree of calculated and sneaky.  The little white lies are running around like wild fire, or truth not being told at all in half stories. I am finding things like nail polish remover out of place that I've specifically asked her about in a drawer in my daughter's room.  I even had the pleasure of peeling a 5 inch rubberized sticky pink scorpion looking thing that was purchased in a gumball machine for 50 cents off the kitchen ceiling after telling them repeatedly not to throw it at the walls or ceiling. I promptly told my son to throw it in the garbage, and watched him do it, only to have the thing re-surface days later while dusting the piano.  (He probably figured it would be safe there because I don't dust often.)

Say Hello to my Little Friends..

We have a lovely little family that comes to visit our yard each year and this year is no exception...Say Hello to my Little Friends..

I had to share because I can't tell you how much I love that my children are able to get this kind of nature in their own back yard.  This is a small taste of a good 20 minute visit we got the other day and even though I know they saw me snapping pictures and they stopped to look, they went back to eating the lovely acorns that bring them into our yard.
